Fernie Snowmobile Association Receives $9,666 Grant for Enhance Signage Program

In partnership with Recreation Sites and Trails BC, the Fernie Snowmobile Association is excited to announce we have been awarded a $9,666 grant from the 2024 ORV Trail Fund. This funding will support a comprehensive signage enhancement program designed to boost safety and promote responsible snowmobile use in the Corbin, Morrissey, and Coal Creek areas.

Our project will address key gaps by replacing worn, damaged, or outdated signage and adding new wayfinding markers at crucial decision points. Given Fernie’s intricate land use base and the diverse stakeholder interests, clear and effective signage is vital for guiding users and protecting sensitive ecosystems. With up to 83% of trail users coming from out of town and potentially unfamiliar with local regulations, this initiative will ensure that on-site signage is easily available to facilitate informed decision-making. The project aligns our collaborative efforts with the province to steer OHV use away from environmentally sensitive areas while enhancing the recreational experience within our five approved organized snowmobile polygons.

Since its inception in 2017, the ORV Trail Fund has allocated over $1.6 million to 139 projects across B.C., thanks to a portion of vehicle registration fees collected by ICBC. This fund not only improves off-road vehicle trails but also brings substantial economic benefits to both rural and urban communities.

In addition to the grant, the Fernie Snowmobile Association will contribute $3,000 in direct funding from rider contributions and will engage our volunteers to complete the project by October 2024. Much of the work will be completed on September 21st at our Annual Work Bee event. Our upgraded signage program will reinforce respect for the land, honor local indigenous values, and empower riders to cultivate a safe and respectful snowmobile community in these important recreation areas. Stay tuned for updates as we advance these essential improvements!
