Coal Creek Update:
We were given the green light two weeks ago to commence snow road building activities up Coal Creek by the private landowner as they had finished timber harvesting activities in that area for the season. The FSA immediately hired heavy equipment to assist blading snow back into the road from the banks in advance of sending the snowcat down the trail to complete the delicate task of actual trail building and grooming.
In anticipation of an opening, our snowcat operators had been maintaining the trail from the Rolling Hills Cabin to Paige’s Draw all season which left that stretch in excellent condition. However, work below this junction has proven difficult due to large rocks/woody debris left on the trail. As of last Sunday PM we were able to complete a significant amount of clearing/building down to the Matheson junction while still maintaining our 4 day a week grooming schedule.
Mother Nature threw us some help yesterday with 30cm of new snow! This new snow is ‘bridging’ over the crud and allowing us to continue efforts with day cat work this week as we tediously pack and re-establish a safe and groomable trail down the last stretch to the staging area.
Your Safety: Please note that recent logging activity has created new avalanche paths affecting the road and your exposure while riding on the trail (above the switchbacks, just after the bridge). We will be working with avalanche professionals to mitigate grooming access in this area as we do with the lower CC slide paths under the operational direction of our Avalanche Safety Plan. There is a buncher head and water tank that we will be marking off with flagging and, when conditions permit, a snow berm. At this time, the CC staging area is occupied by a few remaining slash piles limiting available parking opportunities this winter.
We will continue to post updates via our social media channels, the groomer’s reports on our website, and we will also distribute an email to members once Coal Creek is officially open for access. Please note that the BEST quality groomed trails and parking will be via the Morrissey Staging area this weekend. A reminder that you can access the same sledding areas traditionally available from CC via Morrissey (there is, in fact, quicker access to and more km of grooming available on that side of the trail network). Both Morrissey lots plowed this AM.
